Full Job Description
We are seeking interested Marylanders to apply to be short-term Election Workers for the May 2024 primary elections. As an Election Worker, you will play a vital role in ensuring the integrity, nonpartisan conduct, and smooth operation of the electoral process. You may be called upon to work for as little as two working days, or for up to several weeks. Roles can start as early as April 22nd but later start dates are possible. Most positions run through May 15th, although some positions may continue after Election Day. Pay ranges from $15-$30 per hour.
As an Election Worker, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks essential to the conduct of fair and transparent elections. During the screening process applicants will be placed into roles that best fit their interest and skills.
Your duties may include but are not limited to:
- Setting up and preparing polling locations for voting.
- Assisting voters with checking in and providing guidance on the voting process.
- Providing information and assistance to voters with disabilities or language barriers.
- Supporting the accurate and secure counting and tabulating of votes.
- Maintaining order at the polling location.
- Testing, inventorying, or delivering supplies and equipment.
- Adhering to all election laws, regulations, and procedures to safeguard the integrity of the election process.
Requirements
- Must be available to work at least two full days, including May 13 and 14th, 2024.
- Must be able to complete a Maryland Criminal Justice Information System background check.
- Must be impartial and non-partisan during all election activities. This means that during your service as an election worker you will not advocate for the election or defeat of any candidate on the ballot, or any political party.
- Reliable, flexible, punctual, and able to commit to assigned shifts, which may include evenings and weekends.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions accurately.
- The ability to read, write and speak the English language.
- Welcoming and friendly attitude.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- For some roles we will be looking for candidates who are comfortable performing basic tasks using technology, such as operating a laptop computer and connecting it to a printer.
- Some roles may have additional requirements, such as a high school diploma or GED, previous experience as an election worker or volunteer, the ability to drive a vehicle or have your own transportation, the ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods and perform tasks as needed, or may ask for customer service or warehouse experience.
