Full Job Description
Vision Point Systems, Inc. is currently recruiting for a talented, innovative machining technician. This position is housed onsite at a customer location in Bethesda, Maryland. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Machine mechanical test specimens using manual machine tools, such as band saws, lathes, and mills. Typical test samples will be tensile and Charpy impact specimens in ASTM E8 and E23, respectively, but other sample types may be desired periodically.
- Collect objective quality evidence (OQE) that specimens were prepared correctly. This may include verifying sample surface finish/roughness, final dimensions to be within specified limits, or otherwise comparing specimen preparation techniques against manufacturer-recommended specifications.
- Prepare metallic test specimens for testing, including abrasive blasting, grinding/polishing, fixturing, and other related tasks.
- Operate a forklift to move metal test articles and laboratory equipment.
- Maintain functionality of equipment (bench-top testing equipment, machine tools, blasting cabinets, etc.), including troubleshooting non-functioning equipment, replacing broken components, checking equipment calibration, and scheduling for calibration to be performed.
- Assist engineers with test program execution. This may involve performance of laboratory and/or field tests, helping with specimen evaluation and data collection, and/or performing various inspections in support of welding/metellurgy-related projects.
- Assist Government personnel with laboratory upkeep. This may include maintaining hazardous materials inventory lists, organizing laboratory inventory, and assisting with general maintenance and cleaning of laboratory spaces.
Requirements
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.
- Be able to work independently and be a self-starter.
- Must demonstrate qualities to work with precision and pay special attention to details.
- Must demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
- Must have 1+ years of experience working in a machine shop or other similarly aligned experience.
- Must have some basic machining experience with the ability to run simple machine tools to make test specimens.
Desired Skill(s):
- Experience working with and supporting US Navy and/or US Marine Corp programs is highly desired.
- Experience with materials and mechanical testing is desired.
- Associates degree or higher in Science, Engineering or related field is desired.
- Welding experience is highly desired.
