Full Job Description

Maryland Rural Development Corporation is seeking a caring, reliable, and safety-conscious individual to join our team as a Bus Monitor for our Greensboro Head Start Program.

The Bus Monitor ensures the safety and well-being of children during transportation to and from the program, fostering a welcoming and supportive environment. The Bus Monitor assists the Bus Driver in providing safe bus transportation for Head Start children, assuring that each child is picked up and delivered on schedule daily. This position works approximately 30 hours per week.

Typical Duties

  • Assist children during boarding and exiting the bus, ensuring their safety and into the care of a responsible adult (on the authorized list) upon leaving the bus.
  • Monitor and supervise children during transportation to maintain order and safety.
  • Enforce rules and policies to ensure a safe and respectful bus environment.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians as needed regarding transportation matters.
  • Report any incidents, accidents, or safety concerns to the bus driver or program staff.
  • Assist children with seat belts, harnesses, or other safety equipment as needed.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records for children on the bus.
  • Support children with special needs or disabilities as required.
  • Collaborate with the bus driver and program staff to ensure smooth operations.
  • Ensure that the bus driver is not distracted from safe operation of the vehicle.
  • Ensure each child is positioned properly with seat belts, car seats, or other appropriate restraints as mandated per age and weight by state law.
  • Ensure that any behavioral issues do not compromise the safety of any child on the bus.
  • Ensure that no child is ever left unattended while on the bus, following all procedures put in place to prevent a child being left behind.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or a GED.
  • Experience working with children, especially in early childhood settings, is a plus.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and patient in stressful situations.
  • Must pass a background check and meet health requirements.

Schedule and Compensation:

  • Part-time, Monday through Friday.
  • Hourly rate: $19.15
