Thorlabs is a dynamically growing company in the Photonics sector designing and manufacturing complex optical systems from lasers to microscopes.  As a privately held company with financial stability and commitment to research and innovation, Thorlabs is able to pursue challenging, innovative, and unconventional multiyear development projects. We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Laser Spectroscopy Application Engineer to join our Spectroscopy Instrument group located in the Washington D.C. metro area. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in laser spectroscopy techniques, coupled with hands-on experience in application development and customer support. This role involves working closely with our R&D, engineering and sales teams to develop, optimize, and implement laser spectroscopy solutions tailored to diverse scientific and industrial applications.

Purpose of the Position:

The primary purpose of the position is to augment an existing engineering team with application expertise to help guide the development of future spectroscopy instruments and marketing activities. A particular focus area in laser spectroscopy will be on dual comb spectroscopy systems and their applications.  This role is crucial in bridging the gap between cutting-edge scientific research and practical, real-world applications. The position is designed to leverage deep expertise in laser spectroscopy to optimize existing products, develop new applications, and provide exceptional technical support to both internal teams and external customers. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in laser spectroscopy techniques, coupled with hands-on experience in application development and customer support. This position requires some traveling to support system installations or application demonstrations. The travelling is typically about 10% and is not to exceed 15%.

 

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

·       Drive the advancement of laser spectroscopy techniques and solutions to address emerging scientific and industrial needs.

·       Tailor and implement laser spectroscopy technologies for a range of applications.

·       Offer technical support and training to customers.

·       Work closely with the sales team to handle technical inquiries from potential customers.

·       Work closely with R&D and product development to ensure that product innovations are aligned with market needs and customer expectations.

·       Represent the company in scientific and industry forums to promote our technology and expertise.

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

·       Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all company policies and procedures.

·       Adhering to company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Physical Activities:

Work may be active at times, could stand, walk or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. Exerts up to 35 lbs. of force occasionally. Work areas may be noisy at times.

Requirements

Qualifications

Experience:

·       3+ years of experience in spectroscopy/sensing applications, or instrument development in the industry.

Education:

·       Master’s degree (MS), or higher in Physics, Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Material Sciences with spectroscopy focus

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

The following are required:

·       Proven experience with laser spectroscopy techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, or absorption spectroscopy.

·       Experience with spectroscopy data analysis and processing using external libraries and toolboxes.

·       Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues.

·       Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

·       Experience in application development and customer support is highly desirable.

·       Ability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team environment.

·       Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

The following are preferred but not required:

·       Hands-on experience with laser systems, optical components, optical system alignment and testing.

·       Experience with the design and use of optical frequency comb systems (including dual comb laser spectroscopy)

·       Experience using vendor software packages and chemometric packages used for spectroscopy.

·       Experience with software for data acquisition and data processing.

·       Knowledge of relevant industry standards and regulations.

Travel Requirements:

This position requires traveling within the US as well as internationally to support system installations, customer demos and trade shows. The travelling is typically about 10% and is not to exceed 15%.

Direct Reports

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Salary for this position will range 100K-120K
