Organizational Overview:
Since being founded locally in 1985, Make-A-Wish Illinois has granted more than 17,000 wishes and continues its mission to share the power of a wish with children in all 102 counties across the state.
A wish can be a game-changer for a child with a critical illness. This belief guides us in everything we do at Make-A-Wish. It inspires us to grant life-changing wishes for children going through so much.
Life-changing wish journeys are made possible by dedicated staff and volunteers who fulfill the work of our mission, helping children discover, create, fulfill and experience the lasting impact of their most heartfelt wish.
The Referral Outreach internship is focused on helping our families get started on their journey with Make-A-Wish. As families and medical professionals inquire about Make-A-Wish, the intern will screen referrals for review by our Referral Outreach Team. The intern will also follow up with the medical teams to secure intake and medical eligibility forms. As time permits, the intern will also assist with Referral Outreach activities in order to help us reach as many children as possible.
Key Responsibilities Include:
· Assisting with screening calls
· Helping with data entry related to wish children and families
· Reviewing referral information
· Preparing collateral materials for outreach events
· Other duties as assigned.
Time Commitment: 10-15 hours per week (hybrid work experience), including at least one in-office working day (flexible), from early January through end of May. It is required to attend our in-office orientation on Tuesday, January 7th, 2025.
Requirements
Skills and Abilities:
· Ability to demonstrate empathy and compassion in written, verbal and in-person communications
· Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
· Strong attention to detail
· Ability to work in a fast paced, collaborative environment
· Desire to contribute to the mission of Make-A-Wish
· Excellent oral and written communication skills
· Confident making eligibility screening calls to prospective families (training provided)
Preferred Qualifications:
· Fluency in Spanish preferred, but not required
· Coursework in Medicine, Nursing, Psycho-Social Services, and/or CCLS
· Experience with database systems such as Raiser's Edge & Salesforce
Additional Requirements:
· Must be able to work in a hybrid environment and commute to our downtown Chicago office
· Minimum age for all internships is 18
· Selected candidates will be asked to participate in a criminal background check.
