Marten Law is seeking an experienced and well-rounded legal assistant to work with the attorneys and staff to support our growing environmental and energy law practice.

Our team of lawyers includes recognized authorities in climate change, wind and solar development, air quality, water resources and water quality, endangered species, forestry, public lands, fisheries, environmental cleanup, and environmental and energy project review and permitting. We work throughout the United States on large-scale projects involving complex negotiations, transactions, and litigation. Our lawyers practice out of offices in Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; Boise and Twin Falls, Idaho; Washington, D.C.; and Boston, Massachusetts.
Legal Assistants are vital to our success and are valued for increasing the firm’s productivity and efficiency. This position includes managing the work product of 20+ busy, committed lawyers performing complex work across the country. This is a permanent, full-time position with exceptional benefits, a competitive salary, and a supportive work environment. We are looking for a smart, hard worker who ideally has at least three years’ experience working in a law firm; local, state or federal attorneys’ office; state government’ environmental NGO; or environmental agency. Exceptions to work experience will be made for exceptional applicants.
Some of your specific responsibilities at Marten will include:
- Provide support to our attorneys including but not limited to formatting, proofreading, and quality control of legal documents (including pleadings, deposition notices, discovery, subpoenas, trial binders, etc.)
- Finalizing formal court documents for service and/or filing.
- Promptly file pleadings, motions, responses, replies and other materials in federal and state courts nationwide in accordance with court-specific rules. Because filings are often complicated and involve organizing and filing multiple declarations and exhibits in support, priority will be given to candidates with direct experience.
- Arrange service of process.
- Review court rules diligently and calculate corresponding deadlines.
- Organize and maintain physical and electronic case files.
- Access court documents using PACER and/or court websites and other sources.
- Manage case and court deadlines and maintain case documentation.
- Utilize file transfer protocol (FTP) file-sharing sites.
- Provide litigation support in complex civil matters, including assisting attorneys in preparing for depositions, court appearances, arbitrations and mediations, trial, and administrative hearings in addition to attending hearings and trials as needed.
- Prepare tables of contents and tables of authorities for pleadings.
- Effectively organize preparatory materials, both in paper and electronic format, for attorney use in meetings, presentations, hearings, and other settings.
- Prepare correspondence for both internal and external distribution.
- Conduct client and attorney communications, maintaining professionalism across all forms of communication, whether in-person, by telephone, email, or virtually.
- Familiarity with document revision management and document comparisons.
- Manage attorney calendars.
- Work collaboratively with the firm’s legal assistants and paralegals to support the firm’s needs.
Requirements
- 3+ years or more of prior law firm or similar experience.
- Have an Associate or Bachelor’s degree.
- Have a demonstrated interest in the environmental field.
- Have a strong work ethic and a professional and positive attitude.
- Take pride in your work and timely deliver superior work product.
- Pay exceptional attention to detail.
- Take initiative.
- Work well as a member of a team and handle stress effectively.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro. Experience in other programs used in legal practice, including programs such as NetDocuments, SharePoint, ShareFile, Teams, docketing software such as JuraLaw, and others is preferred.
- Ability to prioritize workload effectively and perform a variety of tasks in a fast-paced environment.
We provide a competitive salary range spanning for $58,000.00 to $65,000.00, complemented by a comprehensive benefits package.
