Full Job Description
Homesteading Family is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Editorial Assistant to support our editorial team in creating engaging and informative content. As an Editorial Assistant, you will assist with various tasks including research, writing, editing, and fact-checking. Our ideal candidate has an excellent command of vocabulary, spelling, grammar and writing skills and is a top tier communicator, both written and verbal. Salary offered is 38,500-45,000 annually, depending on experience.
Responsibilities
- Reports to the managing editor
- Conduct research on various homesteading topics and compile information
- Assist with writing and editing articles
- Fact-check articles for accuracy and credibility
- Schedules and tracks production deadlines for editorial and design staff
- Edits and/or proofreads magazine and advertising copy
- Contributes regular content and assist with generating fresh ideas for monthly magazine as part of writing staff
- Organize and maintain content calendars and publishing schedules for editorial and design staff
- Coordinate with contributors and ensure timely submission of content and compensation for writing and design contributors
- Manages post-production distribution– mailing, mailhouse arrangements, etc.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and developments in homesteading
- Assembles and regularly updates magazine media kit for potential advertisers
- Facilitates communication among magazine “departments” and fulfills information requests
- Interface with current and potential advertisers, building and maintaining relationships
- Regularly engage in the Homesteading Family membership
- Respond to magazine specific correspondence as needed

Requirements
- Prior experience in a similar role or educational background in journalism, communications, or a related field
- Working knowledge of printing, publishing, and graphic arts procedures and related computer software
- Excellent keyboarding skills and other computer skills including Google docs, DropBox, and Microsoft suite
- Excellent and positive written and verbal communication skills
- Strong research and fact-checking abilities
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills, with the ability to be a flexible and versatile team player
- Understanding of homesteading, self-sufficiency, or related topics is a plus
- Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines
- Passion for the homesteading lifestyle and commitment to producing high-quality content
- Strong preference for a candidate in the Eastern or Central time zones, or in the Pacific/Mountain time zone if you are willing to work during ET work hours.
Benefits
PTO is 80 hours a year and we offer a 401k plan after 6 months employment. Work hours are flexible and work from home.
