Full Job Description

The Director of Student Success at ICOM plays a critical role in enhancing the academic, personal, and professional growth of osteopathic medical students. This leadership position oversees the activities of the Learning Specialists and Behavioral Health Specialists, ensuring that students receive the comprehensive support they need to thrive in a rigorous academic environment. The Director will develop and implement strategies, programs, and services designed to support student success, with a focus on academic achievement, mental health, wellness, and overall student well-being.

FUNCTIONS & DUTIES:

Leadership and Management:

  • Lead, supervise, and mentor a team of Learning Specialists and Behavioral Health Specialists.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of student support services, ensuring alignment with the medical school’s mission and goals.
  • Collaborate with faculty, administration, and other student services to promote a cohesive approach to student success.
  • Manage the department’s budget, resources, and staffing needs.

Student Support Programs:

  • Develop and oversee academic support programs, including tutoring, study skills workshops, and time management training, tailored to the needs of medical students.
  • Coordinate mental health and wellness initiatives, including counseling services, stress management workshops, and resilience training.
  • Monitor student progress and intervene as necessary to provide additional support, ensuring students are equipped to succeed in their medical education.

Assessment and Evaluation:

  • Conduct regular assessments of student needs and outcomes, using data to inform program development and improvement.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of student success programs and services, implementing changes as necessary to improve outcomes.
  • Prepare and present reports on student success metrics to senior leadership.

Collaboration and Outreach:

  • Foster strong relationships with faculty, staff, and external partners to enhance the delivery of student support services.
  • Act as a liaison between students, faculty, and administration on matters related to student success, wellness, and mental health.
  • Participate in committees and working groups focused on student affairs, academic support, and health and wellness.

Student Advocacy:

  • Advocate for student needs and concerns, ensuring that policies, procedures, and practices reflect a commitment to student success and well-being.
  • Provide individual and group support to students facing academic and personal challenges, referring them to appropriate resources as needed.

ADA Accommodation Oversite:

  • Oversee the implementation of ADA accommodations, ensuring all programs, services, and activities are accessible to students with disabilities, in accordance with federal and state laws.
  • Work closely with faculty, staff, and disability services to develop and implement individualized accommodation plans that support student success.
  • Provide training and resources to faculty and staff on ADA compliance and best practices for accommodating students with disabilities.
  • Contribute to the development and revision of institutional policies and procedures related to accessibility and accommodations, ensuring they are current and effective.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, student affairs, or a related field required; Doctorate preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a higher education setting, with a focus on student success, academic support, or mental health services.
  • Previous supervisory experience, particularly in managing teams of professionals such as Learning Specialists and Behavioral Health Specialists.
  • Strong understanding of the unique challenges faced by medical students and the ability to develop targeted support strategies.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with a diverse student population.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Experience working in a medical or health sciences educational setting.
  • Familiarity with accreditation standards related to student support services in medical education.
  • Proven track record of program development and assessment in student affairs or a related field.
