Full Job Description
The ICOM Biomedical Sciences Department is searching for a full-time, open rank, 12-month, non-tenured, broadly-trained, biochemistry faculty member responsible for the education of osteopathic medical students. The primary position responsibility is providing instruction, in their area of expertise, to medical students across a two-year preclinical curriculum. Additional responsibilities include working in collaboration with the Department Chair and colleagues; remaining current in professional disciplines; participating in professional societies and scholarly activities; and participating in assigned, required, and other related professional services and activities of the College.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teaching Biochemistry toosteopathic medical students using diverse teaching methods, including traditional lectures, active learning, small group, and other creative methods of instruction
- Advising and mentoring medical students as the move through their educational journey
- Serving the academic mission of the College through service on strategic institutional committees, as assigned, and through extramural service in local and national professional organizations
- Advancing scholarly work, which may include: medical education research, independent scientific research, clinical or translational research, and other related scientific or scholarly endeavors
- Performs other job related duties and special projects as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
- Terminal degree (PhD, or equivalent) with strong expertise in biochemistry or closely related field
- Excellent educational skills, including evidence of substantial teaching experience in higher education, medical education, or other health sciences in an academic setting
- Evidence of a growth mindset, as demonstrated by the applicant’s response to constructive feedback from colleagues and students
- Evidence of being a dynamic team player who values collaboration, collegiality, mutual support, and team cohesion
- Commitment to delivering high-quality, innovative biochemistry education to future physicians
Preferred Requirements:
- Content interest and experience in metabolism, lipids, protein modification, and/or nutrition biochemistry is preferred. Candidates should be prepared to discuss their specific areas of subject expertise during the interview process
- At least two years teaching experience in an osteopathic medical education setting, or at least four years teaching in another academic health sciences setting
- Experience using innovative evidence-based teaching methods, including team-based learning, ‘flipped classroom’, problem-based learning, distance learning, interactive large group presentation, audience response systems, etc.
- Knowledge of Instructional Technologies and familiarity with Learning Management Systems and Assessment softwares
- Experience with instructional design processes (e.g. backward design principles) and ability to align instructor objectives with the curriculum
- Experience in educational theory; peer, learner, and self-evaluation; continuous, iterative quality improvement processes; and approaches for assessment of skills and knowledge
- Proficiency in medical exam item writing (COMLEX-style and/or USMLE)
- Track record of scholarly and/or research activities (publications, presentations, grantsmanship, etc.)
- Evidence of service contribution at an academic institution (e.g., committee service, task force participation, applicant interviewing, etc.)
- Experience in academic advising and mentoring of medical students through all four years of medical school and the Residency Match process
