Job Summary

The Assistant Farm Educator is an essential part of the Sanctuary at Impact Life Farm team running a transitional residential recovery program which includes a community based agricultural amenity, and an animal assisted therapy program. Your responsibility will be to assist in the maintenance of 17 acres of land including crops, floriculture, livestock, and wetlands, the production and sales of produce, community interactions with the farm. The Assistant Farm Educator Farm Education will spend much of their day outdoors but may also assist in duties related to farm education and skills development with the residents. This position will be involved in farm maintenance but will specifically have a strong emphasis on year-round crop production and livestock maintenance and care.

General Accountabilities

  • Communicate clearly and consistently with all other staff members, both through personal interactions and electronically
  • Communicate with the Farm Education and Operations Supervisor about animal, equipment, and grounds issues.
  • Planting, weeding, harvesting, washing, tending livestock, working with heavy equipment, etc.
  • Assist with planning and teaching agricultural classes.
  • Ensuring premium quality of all produce leaving the farm
  • Ensuring premium experience of all visitors to the farm
  • Maintaining sanitary, safe, and organized work and storage areas
  • Ability to (or learn how to) drive various farm equipment including, but not limited to passenger vans, pick-up trucks, livestock trailer, and tractor.
  • Assist with special events.
  • Complete necessary paperwork, including purchase orders.
  • Answer general program inquiries via telephone and email.
  • Health and Safety - Applied to all duties and functions.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, and local regulations, health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
  • Appreciate and embrace diversity in all interactions with clientele, staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Contribute to the organization's overall success by performing all assigned duties professionally, timely, and accurately.
  • Comply with all IMPACT Life policies and procedures.
  • Participate in IMPACT Life committees and subcommittees.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by supervisor.


The Assistant Farm Educator will work a Monday through Friday day schedule depending on season and weather. Weekend (Saturday- Sunday) work will be infrequent but possible and “on-call” status will regularly be required for urgent or emergency situations.

Requirements

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of prior farm experience required.
  • Associate degree in Animal Science, Agriculture, Environmental Science, Education, or another related field, or High School Diploma and 2 years work experience or equivalent job experience required.

Skills

  • Working knowledge of nature and the outdoors
  • Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
  • Desire and ability to work with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds, as well as with livestock, in a farm setting.
  • Able to walk at least three miles and lift 30 pounds.
  • Flexible and able to respond to changes in the work schedule and work environment.
  • Self-motivated with a strong ability to work independently.
  • Outgoing, energetic, and welcoming to all farm residents and visitors
