St. Luke’s School, a secular (non-religious), college-preparatory day school serving grades 5 through 12 in New Canaan, Connecticut, seeks to add a Middle School Computer Science & Engineering teacher to its Fellows Program. The St. Luke’s Fellows Program is an incredible opportunity to learn from experienced, master teachers at a school that leads the way in educating educators. Fellows have a two or three-class course load and are a part of a robust cohort of creative, flexible, and high-energy early career teachers. With equal focus on teaching and learning the craft of teaching, this two-year program provides structured time during the day to plan, observe, and reflect. With our consistent and constructive feedback, generous professional development, academic technology support, and immersion in constructivist pedagogy, Fellows leave the St. Luke’s program as experienced and highly marketable educators. The Computer Science & Engineering Fellow will join a dynamic, highly motivated department that enjoys collaboration. Most of the work in design thinking and engineering happens in St. Luke’s designLab, a state-of-the-art 4000+ sq ft digital and physical fabrication lab.

We are looking for individuals with excellent content knowledge, strong communication skills, an inherent drive to be engaged and involved, and a pronounced enjoyment of students, their lives, interests, and goals. Candidates with summer camp, coaching, or any experience in which authentic connections with students are forged, are encouraged to apply.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Teach two Middle School CS&E classes:
    • 7th grade Computing & AI Ethics
    • 8th grade Electronics & Robotics
  • Partner with the Department Chair and other CS&E colleagues to develop the curriculum for these two new courses. Course descriptions can be found here.
  • Meet regularly with the Fellows Director and other members of the Fellows cohort.
  • Lead or support an after-school Robotics activity each season (fall/winter/spring).
  • Serve as a Co-Advisor for 5-8 Middle School students.
  • Assist with supervisory duties, such as study hall proctoring, lunchroom supervision, detention duty, and chaperoning events outside school hours.
  • Note that all St. Luke's Teaching Fellows are required to attend a teaching institute for early career teachers, held on campus August 12-16, 2024.

Key Skills and Qualities:

  • Inspiring, positive, high-capacity/bandwidth, and adaptable
  • Ability to manage a complex calendar and meet deadlines
  • Eagerness to pursue continuous improvement with feedback
  • Superb oral and written communication skills
  • Background working in a Macintosh environment or ability to adapt quickly
  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree or strong relevant coursework in Computer Science and/or Engineering
  • Highly developed cultural competency skills, with a demonstrated commitment to furthering the creation of an equitable and inclusive school community that supports a sense of belonging for all students
