Full Job Description

We seek passionate & committed part-time Math Hoops Coaches for K-5th grade students in Oakland for the fall 2024 season!

Make a positive difference in America’s youth by coaching a unique K-5th after-school program combining math and basketball! No previous coaching experience is required - we train all coaches.

Do you love working with youth, solving math problems, playing basketball, or helping kids develop math skills and improve math scores? As a Youth Math Hoops Coach with ANTS (America's Next Talented Stars), you'll lead or assist a weekly after-school program at one of our Oakland school communities. Our upcoming season runs from September to November 2024 and January - March 2025 and culminates in an epic end of season tournament with all participating schools. (must be available for the entire season). We provide all necessary training, equipment, and support. Being an ANTS Coach is a great way to learn to coach sports while serving our community. ANTS partner schools & communities are located across Oakland, San Francisco, and Walnut Creek. Classes will run at community parks and elementary schools.

Coach Responsibilities

  • Lead a fun & safe weekly math and basketball practice for 10-20 students ages 8-11.
  • Teach the FUNdamentals of math AND basketball through a cohesive and game-filled lesson plan. Training provided!
  • Ensure a safe and reliable program by arriving on time each week on your program day for the entire duration of the season.
  • Attend an orientation training in person.
  • Interact positively with parents, teachers, and school staff
  • Set up before and clean up after your program
  • Transport all coaching equipment to/from class each week

Locations

ANTS partner schools & communities are located across Oakland. Classes will run in classrooms and basketball courts at the school sites.

Schedule

Classes generally occur between 3 pm - 5 pm on the same day each week for a 10 week season, twice per year. You must be available to coach in the afternoon on your program day (at least one day/week). You will coach one weekly 1-hour practice at an elementary school and join for the epic end of season Oakland-wide tournament with all participating schools!

Requirements

  • Transportation: Coaches must have reliable transportation to get to their various coaching sites. You may be required to bring equipment to & from class, so a vehicle is very helpful.
  • Responsible & professional: Arrive on time to each practice and keep accurate attendance. Interact with parents and school staff positively.
  • Communication: You will communicate with ANTS, parents, and site staff through email and phone.
  • Enthusiastic & fun: ANTS coaches are positive role models for our students. We expect that you share our deep beliefs in the larger themes we are promoting: sportsmanship, wellness, and positivity.
  • Patience: Be a patient person who understands young children & their need to develop at their own pace.
  • Experience: Experience as a player or coach (at least 2 years) is highly valuable, though not necessarily required.
  • Background check: A successful candidate must pass a Federal & State Background Check and/or FBI Fingerprinting (Livescan) and test negative for TB test (within the last 4 years).
