Full Job Description

 TRL11 is a venture-backed startup bringing cutting-edge video technology to the new space economy. Based in Irvine, CA, we are seeking a highly skilled Systems Engineer with expertise in defining, integrating, and validating electronics and avionics.  The systems engineer will be responsible for our video systems flying on upcoming missions. Join our team and play a crucial role in shaping the success of our space missions.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and update comprehensive engineering documentation for various spacecraft systems such as requirements, validation plans, block diagrams, interface control documents, and bill of materials (BOM). Provide support to facilitate completion of projects and architectural designs.
  • Translate mission objectives and customer needs into technical specifications and system-level requirements for products, ensuring compatibility with spacecrafts and mission constraints, including radiation tolerance, thermal, vibration, and weight requirements, etc.
  • Define interfaces between TRL11 products and the spacecraft system, including power data, pinouts, and mechanical mounting strategies.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams to define clear requirements and verification plans, ensure compatibility of design between competencies, and integrate into one cohesive system. 
  • Foster effective communication and collaboration between engineering and business teams, ensuring alignment of project goals and objectives.
  • Identify and mitigate key risks (DFMEA) and develop redundancy and fail-safe strategies to ensure reliability.  Create and maintain documentation to support certification processes and adherence to specifications.
  • Track concerns during the development cycle and ensure that they are addressed in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of engineering experience in an aerospace engineering discipline 
  • 2+ years of experience in systems engineering and operations with a strong understanding of systems engineering principles

Preferred Qualification:

  • General knowledge of spacecraft subsystems.
  • Ability to lead a team of engineering professionals in solving challenging problems.
  • Ability to dive into challenging problems to understand them fully and define a robust solution.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and good presentations skills
  • Experience at early stage space startups
  • Experience taking a product or project from ideation to deployment
  • Experiencing modeling, designing for, testing for, and testing for radiation environments in low earth orbit (LEO), geostationary orbit (GEO), geostationary transfer orbits (GTO), and cislunar orbits.
  • Design and testing experience with vibration, mechanical shock, electrostatic discharge (ESD), electromagnetic interference (EMI), thermal cycling, and thermal vacuum (TVAC).
  • Working knowledge of EE as it relates to schematics, and electrical/systems architecture
