Full Job Description
We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced Intellectual Property Manager to lead Cuberg’s strategic approach to intellectual property (IP) management. The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of IP, including patents and trade secrets, and critical work streams related to IP such as IP strategy, freedom to operate, and IP generation. They will play a critical role in protecting and maximizing the value of our intellectual assets while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. The IP Manager will work closely with our cell technology and battery systems teams through the technology development cycle - to facilitate day-to-day integration with our technology teams, this role must work from our San Leandro, CA office. Working with the Director of Intellectual Property of Northvolt, you will also have a responsibility for shaping Northvolt’s Li-metal technology portfolio.

Requirements
- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Material Science, or a related technical field. Advanced degree (Master's, JD, or PhD) preferred.
- At least 5 years of experience in intellectual property management; tenure at a battery technology company preferred but not required.
- Proven track record of developing and implementing successful IP strategies to protect and commercialize intellectual assets, manage patent portfolios (including new patent harvesting and maintenance of a growing patent portfolio), protect trade secrets, and conducting freedom to operate (FTO) analyses and mitigating associated risks throughout the product lifecycle.
- Comprehensive knowledge of intellectual property laws and regulations.
- Strong technical background with the ability to understand and analyze complex scientific and technological concepts.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex IP concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including R&D, legal, marketing, and senior management.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyze IP landscapes, identify opportunities and risks, and develop strategic recommendations.
- Proven ability to think strategically and anticipate future IP trends and developments.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a comprehensive intellectual property strategy aligned with the Cuberg’s business objectives, stage of technological maturity, and commercial partnerships.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen the organization's IP portfolio and maximize the value of intellectual assets.
- Oversee the management of the organization's patent portfolio including drafting, filing, and prosecuting patent applications and maintaining a strong ongoing portfolio. Collaborate with inventors and external patent counsel to ensure high-quality patent filings.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to protect trade secrets and confidential information. Advise on best practices for safeguarding trade secrets and preventing unauthorized disclosure.
- Conduct comprehensive freedom to operate (FTO) analyses and monitor the competitive IP landscape. Provide strategic guidance on mitigating risks and obtaining necessary licenses or permissions.
- Raise awareness of the importance of IP protection and compliance throughout the organization. Provide training and education to employees on intellectual property matters, including IP policies, best practices, and legal requirements.
- Support Cuberg’s commercial team in IP due diligence for transactions and partnerships.
- Collaborate closely with Northvolt’s Intellectual Property team, as well as Cuberg’s technology teams, to ensure alignment in IP strategy across the organization.

The target US compensation range for this full-time position is $175,000-$225,000 + equity + benefits. Compensation ranges are determined by level, role and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the target for new hire total cash compensation (base + bonus), individual pay is determined by additional factors including relevant job-related skills, experience and additional factors.
