Full Job Description

Matternet designs, builds and operates autonomous drone networks that enable ultra-fast, low cost, and zero-emission package delivery.

We are seeking a Senior Electromechanical Engineer to drive the design, development, and maintenance of our drone aircraft hardware. This role requires a deep understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, a hands-on approach to problem-solving, and the ability to thrive in a fast-moving startup environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, prototyping, and optimization of electromechanical systems for our drone logistics systems
  • Perform system integration, testing, and validation to ensure performance, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including software, avionics, and manufacturing, to deliver innovative and manufacturable solutions.
  • Drive sustaining engineering initiatives to improve system reliability, troubleshoot field issues, and implement design changes.
  • Manage system-level trade-offs, including weight, thermal performance, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and engineering drawings.
  • Develop, integrate, and validate UAV components, including electronic speed controllers (ESCs), motors, flight controllers, power systems, and communication links.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex system-level challenges related to avionics, flight control algorithms, and mechanical structures.
  • Ensure compliance with aviation regulations and certification requirements, collaborating with regulatory authorities as needed.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams (software, hardware, and regulatory) to ensure seamless integration of UAV systems.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and identify opportunities to integrate advanced solutions into our systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in electromechanical system design, preferably in aerospace, robotics, or related industries.
  • Strong proficiency in CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks) and electrical design software.
  • Experience with FEA and simulation tools for mechanical and thermal analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, system integration, and troubleshooting.
  • Deep understanding of manufacturing processes, including machining, injection molding, and PCB fabrication.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and a creative, detail-oriented mindset.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with aircraft or UAV design and development with a focus on autopilot tuning, propulsion systems, and overall flight dynamics.
  • Experience with optimization and tuning of autopilot parameters to improve stability, control, and performance under various operating conditions.
  • Knowledge of FAA regulations and certification processes for unmanned aircraft systems.
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies.
  • Track record of successful projects in a startup or entrepreneurial environment.

Benefits

  • Salary $150k-$230k
  • Free health plan and One Medical Subscription
  • Dental, vision, life and disability insurance and flexible spending accounts
  • Unlimited PTO
  • 401(k)
