ORGANIZATION

Marin Promise Partners believe that every child in Marin can reach his/her full educational potential regardless of race, ethnicity or income. That’s why more than 40 schools, nonprofits, businesses, and government agencies have come together as a cross-sector cradle to career network to address Marin County’s persistent and systemic educational inequities. With the support of backbone team staff, Partners promise that by 2028 they will have closed educational equity gaps at every stage along the cradle to career educational journey. Using the StriveTogether collective impact framework, Partners are aligning around a common vision, using data to hold each other accountable, taking collective action, and advocating for equitable, systemic change. At Marin Promise Partnership, partners are seeking to create significant and deep impact in each of our six Cradle to Career milestone areas:

  • Enter kindergarten ready to succeed;
  • Master critical literacy concepts in 3rd grade;
  • Master critical math concepts in 8th Grade;
  • Graduate high school ready to succeed in college or career;
  • Enroll in a College or Career Program;
  • Complete a College or Career Program.

OPPORTUNITY

The Marin Promise Partnership Board of Directors seeks a Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization in its next phase of systems change work to advance racial equity in education in Marin. The CEO leads the Backbone Team, which serves as the catalyst to unify and convene the Partners. We work in the space between systems to connect multiple entities into a seamless network of student support. We are process experts trained in results based accountability, continuous improvement, complex systems change, equity, research, business operations, project management, communications, data strategy, human centered design and group process facilitation.

The Backbone Team and CEO support the Leadership Team and the Board of Directors as well as 10+ collaborative action networks in the Partnership focused on eliminating disparities across the cradle to career milestones. They report progress towards these milestone goals as well as support multiple teams in identifying what intervention strategies are working to close the equity gaps. They encourage collective learning and continuous improvement. The backbone team is the “connective tissue” that holds the Partnership together and enables the educational equity eco-system to function more effectively and efficiently. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities of the Chief Executive Officer include:

Lead Marin Promise Partnership to build and inspire the growing educational equity movement in Marin County, ultimately closing the opportunity gap.

  • Work closely with the Leadership Team and Board to design the overall strategic direction of the Partnership;
  • Develop targeted, county-wide cradle to career educational performance metrics in collaboration with school districts, community leaders, and the Leadership Team;
  • Act as the Partnership’s key thought leader and implementer of Marin Promise Partnership’s priorities;
  • Position Marin Promise Partnership as a thought leader in the educational equity movement and the collective impact spaces;
  • Convene a broad and engaged array of partners from across the county who are highly committed to achieving the Partnership’s outcomes; 
  • Manage the Sr. Directors of Collective Impact, Operations, and Development to lead the internal team and work plan of the Partnership, ensuring the Partnership reaches its goals.

Lead on an aggressive growth plan, while ensuring the fiscal health and sustainability of the partnership over time. 

  • Partner closely with the Sr. Director of Development on building and driving an aggressive development strategy that will sustain the partnership’s growth and reach year over year;
  • Partner closely with the Sr. Director of Operations on the annual budgeting process and ongoing projections, ensuring the Partnership spends under its expense goal each year;
  • Ensure soundness of Marin Promise Partnership’s financial structure and outlook, ensuring that resources are in place and allocated appropriately to achieve partnership goals.

Design and deliver on a robust community engagement strategy for the partnership.

  • Partner with the Sr. Director of Collaborative Action and the Communications Manager to develop a sound communications plan that includes earned media, speaking opportunities, ongoing website enhancements, social media and printed materials;
  • Leverage collective impact framework and methodology to shape and create community efforts for positive change;
  • Build and nurture cross-sector partnerships, aligning differing agendas to a common strategy;
  • Act as the primary ambassador of the partnership internally and externally, developing strong working relationships with local media outlets;
  • Establish new local and state relationships, further establishing Marin Promise Partnership as a leader in the educational equity movement.

POSITION COMPETENCIES

A successful candidate in this role for the new Chief Executive Officer will include the following competencies:

  • Mission & Vision Alignment: Demonstrate an advanced ability to ideate on the future and rally a movement around it. Mobilize the partnership and all stakeholders around the vision, catalyzing and motivating change efforts.
  • External Relationship & Community Engagement: Establish, grow and leverage relationships for the betterment of the Partnership. Demonstrates a savvy with forging local relationships, and demonstrates ability to think and act politically. 
  • Data Analysis & Results Orientation: Demonstrates an understanding of a results based accountability process and a deep appreciation for the importance of data to drive action. Shows facility with understanding and communication about data and making data-driven decisions.
  • Development & Fundraising: Demonstrate fundraising capacity that results in meeting or exceeding revenue goals. Ability to articulate the value of investing in the backbone team for the Partnership. 
  • People Leadership & Management: Boast a successful track record of hiring and retaining A players. Develop people, provides clarity around roles and goals, then coaches team members to success in their roles. 
  • Organizational Leadership: Demonstrated competency in managing budgets, financial projections, revenue, and other fiscal responsibilities. Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple projects and competing priorities with attention to detail. Proven results-oriented leadership with the ability to establish and maintain systems for organization-wide goal-setting and measurement of success. 

Requirements

In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Chief Executive Officer candidate will have:

  • Experience in a non-profit or other leadership role, managing and building a high performing team during growth;
  • Highly effective fundraising and relationship development skills;
  • Demonstrated team leadership experience;
  • A high level of credibility among community partners and educational leadership in Marin County. This is highly valued, although not mandatory for this role. Candidates with similar experience outside of Marin County will also be considered.

Benefits

This position offers a competitive salary range of $170,000 - $200,000, flexible work schedule with opportunities to work remotely on occasion and robust benefits including medical, dental, and retirement.
