Full Job Description
Summer Interns support two library services during the summer. One is supporting the library's Summer Reading Program, and the other is supporting the lunch at the library program. Both positions support library staff and help put on enriching programs during the summer. Interns work with a Library and Literacy staff member to experience many aspects of public library work, and support enrichment programs, including assisting with programming and community outreach. Some positions will also have the opportunity to help shelve library materials and provide customer service to library patrons.
The Summer Intern will make meaningful contributions to the library and the Shasta community by supporting our vision of a library that is a community hub for education, entertainment and enrichment where everyone feels welcome. They can expect to gain practical experience working in a professional setting as well as leadership, organizational, team building, and customer service skills.
Requirements
An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.
- Under the supervision of their assigned mentor, provide customer service, assist with technology, and support programming and outreach
- Assists librarians with collection projects including creating displays or helping with the Lunch at the Library summer Program.
- Provides excellent customer service
- Shelves library materials
- Distribute daily meals, track program attendance, and Set up and take down programs
- Shadows library teammates to gain knowledge of library work
- Writes, reflects, and shares about their internship experience
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.
- Must be at least 16 years old
- No work experience necessary
- Ability to learn and understand the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement, and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library
- Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team
- Ability to follow direction
- Ability and desire to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and ages
- Interest in learning and building new skills
- Ability to work independently and solve problems
- Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
- Attention to detail
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
- Occasionally lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds such as files, books, and other materials.

HOURS PER WEEK: 15
HOURLY RATE: $16.00
