Full Job Description
Definition and Purpose
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director – Public Relations, Leadership, and DEI, the Graduate Assistant - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is responsible for assembling information, reports, and other materials related to ASI’s diversity goals, researching diversity and inclusion models and promoting practices related to recruitment, selection, onboarding and retention, and supporting the Assistant Director in the preparation of visuals/presentations and implementation of programs, trainings, meetings, and events.
In order to maximize the graduate assistant’s personal development and ensure that their experience with ASI is broad based, they will be assigned additional responsibilities beyond their specific program or staff area.
Additionally, all ASI employees are responsible for upholding the core values of the organization including but not limited to exhibiting professional behavior, acting as a role model to others, displaying a positive and cooperative attitude, communicating effectively, developing expert knowledge in area of specialization, and working together as a team.
Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Must be a currently enrolled graduate student at Cal Poly. Graduate students must carry 4 units.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
- Demonstrated experience or interest in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programming, training, research, or best practices
- Experience in developing and conducting assessments, reports and analyzing results.
- Exhibit a developed sense of critical thinking, conflict management and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to present complex concepts to large groups.
- Ability to efficiently manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to stay focused while working in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
- Ability to be flexible and adapt to change.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others or independently, as the situation requires.
- Ability to work with diverse populations and those with special limitations or needs.
- Ability to empathize and connect with others in an appropriate manner.
- Ability to handle confidential information according to ASI policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Assistant Director – Public Relations, Leadership, and DEI with the development, coordination and implementation of educational, cultural, and inclusion programs across ASI.
- Assist in coordinating aspects of ASI diversity, equity, and inclusion projects/initiatives, data collection, data entry and analysis, synthesizing information, report writing, and presentation of results to a variety of stakeholders.
- Advise and assist with development or selection of workplace climate assessment tools.
- Assist with preparing presentations and reports related to diversity, equity, and inclusion training.
- Monitor and assess research trends applicable to diversity, equity, and inclusion staff development.
- Develop and implement special projects including initiatives to address current trends and issues, benchmarking, program development,
- Serve on the ASI Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Group.
- Regularly attend and participate in ASI Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice standing committee meetings.
- Assist with the implementation of ASI’s Inclusive Excellence Action Plan.
- Assist with the research, development, and assessment of ASI’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion staff training Program.
- Work with the Assistant Director – Public Relations, Leadership, and DEI to review ASI’s policies, procedures, & practices related to DEI and provide recommendations for changes that will eliminate racial, gender, or any other form of bias.
- Create and support effective collaborative relationships with various campus entities including but not limited to the Office of University Diversity and Inclusion (OUDI) and Student Diversity and Belonging (SDAB).
- Maintain confidentiality in incidents and complaints related to diversity and inclusion.
- Attend meetings and participate in workshops held by ASI.

- Commit to continuous learning/improvement in DEI and cultural competence.
- Recommend and support practices intended to eliminate racial, gender, or any other form of bias in processes, policies, and procedures.
- Demonstrate awareness of one’s own biases, comfort levels, and various aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
- Demonstrate effort to understand each person’s individual and collective role in creating inclusive environments.
- Participate in trainings and activities provided by ASI as it relates to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.
- Represent ASI on committees as appropriate.
Period of Employment
Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.
Benefits
Compensation and Hours
- Hourly Pay Rate: $18.50 per hour plus in-state tuition; maximum 20 hours per week while attending academic classes.
- Hourly Pay Range: $18.50 per hour - $18.50 per hour
