Full Job Description
The Garden Assistant is managed and employed by BACR and works collaboratively with the Garden Coordinator, APG teachers and admin to support in creating and facilitating outdoor lessons that incorporate students’ curricular studies in math, science, ELA, social studies, art, nutrition, and sustainability.
Benefits:
- Non-Exempt / Part Time, 25 hours a week
- Compensation: $23-$25 / hour depending on experience
- Schedule: Mon - Fri (5 hours/day - flexible)

Minimum Requirements:
- Knowledge of or interest in topics including urban gardening, botany, environmental science, health and nutrition, food systems, food access, sustainability, permaculture
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations including youth and adults
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively and be flexible, organized, patient, and resourceful
- Experience in computer skills
Preferred:
- Experience working with youth aged 10-14, including individuals with special needs
- Knowledge and skills in small-scale organic food production or home gardening, chicken husbandry, fruit tree care, composting, drip irrigation, greenhouse management, California native plants, garden carpentry, cooking, sustainable design;
- Interest in and knowledge of environmental justice and community engagement
- Bilingual in Spanish or Cantonese
Responsibilities:
- Assists in the facilitation of 1-2 classes in the outdoor classroom each day with students in grades 6-8, including special needs, incorporating math, science, language arts, social studies, art, nutrition, and sustainability topics as they relate to the outdoor classroom (4-8 classes/week)
- Develops and manages an after school gardening project based learning club
- Supports Garden Coordinator with:
- Monitoring chickens
- Facilitating a garden club during lunch two days each week.
- Planning and facilitating four volunteer garden weekend work days for families and community during the school year
- Overseeing maintenance and upkeep of systems and equipment
- Assists in developing lesson plans and curriculum in relation to California, Common Core, and Next Generation Science Standards
- Assists in managing the school garden alongside the Garden Coordinator, plans and prepares for garden work activities including supporting the management of the planting schedule and securing garden supplies and tools
- Flexibility for occasional work on the weekend

Above is the pay range for this position that we reasonably expect to pay. Individual compensation is based on various factors including experience/education, skillset, and geographic location.
