The Deputy Tax & Accounting Leader will play a key leadership role in shaping the practice’s tax and bookkeeping services and helping manage a large team of tax professionals. As a CPA with over 5 years of experience, this individual will provide expert guidance on complex tax issues, drive business growth, and ensure high-quality tax services for a diverse client base. The Deputy Tax Director will be responsible for implementing our overall delivery strategy, fostering strong client relationships, ensuring we exceed quality expectations, and guiding professional development for junior members of the tax team. The Deputy Tax & Accounting Leader will report to the Tax & Accounting Leader while also working closely with other members of leadership across the company.
Key Responsibilities
Support Department Leadership:
- Assist the Tax & Accounting Leader in managing a team of tax professionals, including managers, senior staff, and associates.
- Help allocate resources effectively to meet client deadlines and maintain high-quality standards in tax compliance.
Client Relationship & Engagement Management:
- Collaborate with other professionals to serve as a senior tax advisor for key clients, focusing on tax planning, compliance services, and consulting.
- Assist in managing complex client engagements, ensuring quality and timely delivery.
Tax Strategy & Planning:
- Help develop and execute tax strategies that focus on tax minimization, compliance, and risk management.
- Provide technical guidance on tax issues, including corporate, individual, and partnership tax matters.
Technical Expertise & Advisory:
- Provide technical support for the review of complex tax returns and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Assist in researching tax positions on emerging issues and providing defensible tax advice to clients.
Team Development & Mentorship:
- Assist in mentoring tax managers and junior staff to develop their technical skills and leadership abilities.
- Participate in performance reviews and help conduct training sessions on new tax regulations and best practices.
Risk Management & Quality Control:
- Work with the Tax & Accounting Leader and the quality control team to monitor compliance with professional standards and regulatory requirements.
- Support efforts to document and defend tax positions effectively, minimizing risk for both the practice and clients.
Practice Growth & Business Development:
- Assist in identifying new business opportunities and service lines to contribute to the growth of the tax practice.
- Participate in networking and client outreach efforts to help attract new clients and expand existing relationships.
Collaboration with Leadership:
- Collaborate with the Tax & Accounting Leader and other leadership team members to develop and implement long-term strategies for growth and client service.
- Contribute to policy-setting and practice-wide decision-making as needed.
Requirements
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation required.
- 7+ years of experience in tax, including public accounting and tax compliance.
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws.
- Proven experience in managing tax teams or significant client engagements.
- Excellent communication and client relationship management skills.
- Proficiency in tax software (e.g., UltraTax, ProSystem, Lacerte) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Skills
- Master’s degree in Taxation or a related field.
- Experience with specialized tax areas (e.g., international tax, M&A, or SALT).
- Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring and developing staff.
Working Conditions
- Office-based role with the potential for hybrid or remote work depending on practice policies.
- Ability to work extended hours during peak periods such as tax season.
- Occasional travel may be required for client meetings, practice events, or industry conferences.
