Full Job Description

Purpose

Our mission is to improve the health, social and economic outcomes of underserved communities by removing barriers to equitable access to resources and supportive services. Our vision is to establish a thriving community by actively strengthening socially and economically underserved individuals, families, and businesses, through the offering of direct services and resources.

Term

Election to a one-year term (except when filling an unexpired term), subject to re-election.

General Responsibilities

To serve as an active voting member of the legally constituted board which has authority and responsibility for the development of policies and continuing review of the conduct of the business of the April Parker Foundation. To raise funds to support the organization’s programs,

 

Specific Tasks

1. Participate regularly by attending scheduled board meetings, committee or task force meetings as assigned, orientation sessions and special meetings as appropriate.

2. Commit to serve on at least one standing committee or task force and to accept special assignments.

3. Spend time studying and evaluating issues to become informed and prepared to discuss and vote on issues facing the April Parker Foundation. Each board member is expected to vote their position after careful consideration of the issue.

4. Tasks which will require preparation and a vote by Board members include:

  • Decisions on issues, policies, priorities, goals and objectives;
  • Participation with other Board members and staff in the formulation, updating, and approval of long-range
  • strategies and objectives;
  • Nomination and election of members and officers of the Board;
  • Monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of the projects and programs and assure these projects and
  • programs are progressing toward achieving stated objectives; and,
  • Approval and monitoring of the operations and budgets.

5. Support the resolutions and actions of the Board of Directors irrespective of personal opinion as to any such resolution or action.

6. Assure a process is in place to select, employ, and periodically evaluate the performance of the Officers.

7. Make a personal and/or business contribution to the April Parker, as well as solicit funds from others in annual support and capital development campaigns.

8. Promote the mission, goals, and objectives of the April Parker Foundation to increase public awareness, understanding and support of the organization.

 

Duties

  • Uphold the legal duties and laws regarding nonprofit governance
  • Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions
  • Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings
  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization

Requirements

Criteria

  • 1 year of experience on a non-profit board OR 3 years of professional experience in the fields of grant writing, social services, community organizing, fundraising, or financing
  • Willing to accept and promote the mission, goals and objectives of the April Parker Foundation.
  • Possesses professional expertise and influence needed by the April Parker Foundation and/or represents one or more constituencies needed to provide balance to the Board’s membership.
  • Has demonstrated significant leadership capability in the community and is willing to provide that expertise to the operation of the Board and its committees.
  • Willing to make a personal financial contribution at a level that demonstrates commitment and sets a standard for others and is willing to ask others to give.
  • Able and willing to serve effectively as a public representative of the organization and involve others in the work of the April Parker Foundation.

Time Commitment

  • Annual Meeting - 2 hours/year
  • Quarterly Meetings - 2 hours/quarter
  • Committee and Task Force Meetings - TBD Based on Committee

Dues

Dues for the Board of Directors are expected each year and can be paid on a semi-annual or annual basis. Dues cover the cost of Board and committee meetings and materials.
