Job Description: ACT1 Federal is seeking a A highly qualified and motivated part-time research associate to support the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies (TSC), the newest of six Department of Defense Regional Centers.
In this role, you will be trusted to conduct an extensive literature review in preparation for an upcoming security conference. This role involves synthesizing relevant academic and professional publications to support discussions on the following themes: strategic alliances, security cooperation, geopolitical challenges, defense and military readiness, economic security, indigenous and community perspectives, and legal/governance frameworks.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinating with the TSC Associate Director for Research and Development on all work.
Research:
- Conducting research and categorizing the literature base on the themes listed above.
- Developing keywords, subjects, and criteria for selecting relevant literature.
- Conducting literature and information searches across the selected databases and sources.
- Reviewing search results to identify studies and publications which meet predefined inclusion criteria.
- Evaluating the quality, relevance, and contributions of the selected literature.
Writing:
- Summarizing key findings and insights from the literature in a coherent manner that highlights patterns, relationships, and areas requiring further research.
- Compiling the analysis into a well-structured document which includes an introduction that outlines the review's objectives and scope, a methodology section describing the search and selection process, a discussion section presenting the analysis and synthesis of findings, and a conclusion that summarizes key insights and identifies potential directions for future research.
- Ensuring all cited literature is accurately referenced in the review document according to the preferred citation style.
Review:
- Reviewing the draft literature review for coherence, clarity, and completeness.
- Revising as necessary based on peer and supervisor feedback; and finalizing the document for printing
Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in a field relevant to the conference theme, such as international relations, environmental science, political science, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of one year (3 years preferred) of research experience writing academic or technical publications for a professional audience.
- Strong academic writing skills, with the ability to write clearly, concisely, and persuasively.
- Experience in writing literature reviews, research papers, or reports that meet academic standards for publication.
- Familiarity with at least two of the specified research themes listed previously.
- Proficiency in using research databases.
- Competence in MS Word and bibliographic plugins.
- Expertise with bibliographic software (e.g., EndNote, Zotero).
- Ability to critically analyze and interpret research findings, identify trends and gaps in the literature, and synthesize complex information into coherent, accessible summaries.
- Must be comfortable working independently in a remote environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with team members.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a related discipline.
- Well-versed in the US national security strategy and US national defense strategy.
- In depth knowledge of the Arctic region and it's security-related issues.
- Published literature in academic journal(s).
